Scientific Evidence

Scientific studies reveal that nearly 85% of the water flowing into Naviluteertha (Renuka Sagar) is sourced from rainfall in the Khanapur region, supported by the dense forest ecosystems of the Bhimgad and Mahadayi Wildlife Sanctuaries. These ecosystems play a critical role in sustaining the water cycle in North Karnataka. Diverting the Mahadayi River poses a serious ecological threat — not only risking the drying up of Naviluteertha but also pushing Belagavi and surrounding areas toward desertification. Protecting the natural flow of the river is essential to preserving the region’s water security and biodiversity.
